The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of Randy Hoppert, a deputy with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office. Officials stated that his sacrifice will never be forgotten as the law enforcement community mourns his loss.

According to information released by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Boudreaux confirmed the identity of the deputy who was fatally shot during an officer-involved shooting in Porterville. Deputy Hoppert, aged 35, had served with the department for six years.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. on 4/9/26, when deputies were in the area of Newcomb and Grand in Porterville carrying out an eviction notice. During the operation, a 59-year-old man, identified as David Morales, allegedly opened fire on the deputies, striking Deputy Hoppert.

Following the shooting, emergency personnel transported Deputy Hoppert to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow officers, officials, and members of the wider community who are honoring his service and dedication.

Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events leading up to the confrontation and the sequence of actions taken at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.
