Danielle Russell Obituary – A Cherished Leader and Advocate for Education
The Dunkirk City School District is mourning the loss of Danielle Russell, the beloved principal of School 5, whose untimely passing has left a profound void in the hearts of students, staff, and families throughout the community. Superintendent Brian Swatland confirmed the news, emphasizing Russell’s unwavering dedication to education and her lasting impact on the district.
Danielle Russell’s career in Dunkirk City Schools began in 2021, where she initially served as Principal of School 7 and Director of Special Education. She later became the principal of School 5, where her compassionate leadership, warmth, and guidance were deeply appreciated by everyone, from students to teachers to parents. Russell’s ability to foster a sense of community and belonging made her a cherished figure in the district.
“Mrs. Russell was a devoted and caring administrator who loved our district and the family and students she worked with at School 5,” Swatland wrote in a statement. “She influenced many lives through her dedication to creating and nurturing the School 5 family.” Her commitment went beyond academic excellence; she made sure that every student felt seen, heard, and valued, establishing a safe and supportive environment for personal and academic growth.
Known for her empathy, understanding, and accessibility, Danielle Russell created an environment in which students could thrive both academically and emotionally. She was deeply invested in the well-being and success of her staff and students, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working with her.
Following a leave of absence announced on March 23 to focus on her health, her passing has been met with widespread grief across the Dunkirk community. The district has offered counseling services and resources to help students, staff, and families cope with their sorrow. To honor Danielle’s memory and ensure her legacy continues, her family has established a GoFundMe to fund an education-based scholarship in her name, benefiting future generations of learners.
Carol Smith has been appointed interim principal at School 5 to ensure continuity in leadership for the students and staff. Superintendent Swatland expressed the collective sense of loss within the district, saying, “The entire ONE Dunkirk community will deeply miss her.”
Though her life was tragically cut short, Danielle Russell’s legacy of leadership, compassion, and dedication to education will continue to inspire and impact generations of students, teachers, and families.
